WHAT IS A UFO? IT'S AN UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT The U.S. Air Force was given responsibility for investigating sightings of unexplained ariel phenomenon on behalf of the U.S. Government. The investigation began unofficially in 1947 as Project Grudge. It was renamed Project Blue Book in 1952. Because many public sightings involved saucer-shaped craft, the news media liked to refer to these as Flying Saucers. However, the Air Force didn't like the term and decided to use a description that would better fit all sizes, shapes and types of objects. They referred to any unexplained ariel phenomenon as Unidentified Flying Ojects. Simply put, a UFO is anything seen in the sky that you can not immediately identify.
